QoS

Delivering reliable high quality multimedia services requires strict control over the Quality of Service (QoS) parameters including bandwidth, latency, jitter and Packet Error Rate (PER).
The CopperStream™ protocol layer provides a mechanism that is compatible with RSVP-like protocols that specifies explicit traffic and rate parameters for each service and not just a relative ordering of packets.

QoS Parameters:

  • Bandwidth
    • Impacts mainly the VoD quality
    • HomePNA V3.1 automatically allocates the required bandwidth for the service
  • Latency
    • Impacts mainly on VoD responsiveness and VoIP service quality
    • CopperStream™ performance: <10mS
  • Jitter
    • Impact mainly on video and voice quality
    • CopperStream™ performance: <1mS
  • PER
    • Impacts mainly on video quality
    • CopperStream™ performance: <10-7 PER (~10-11 BER)

Highlights of the main QoS features supported by CopperStream™:

  • Supports both relative (priority-based) and guaranteed (parameter-based) QoS
  • Deterministic bandwidth, latency, jitter and packet error rate
  • Resource Reservation
  • Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA™)
  • Traffic classification filters for service identification
