What is G.hn?

G.hn is the name of the ITU-T standards subgroup handling next generation home networking solutions. In December, the standard this group had been working on was converted to Recommendation G.9960. Therefore, when you see either of these names, they both represent this exciting new standard.

When will G.hn become a complete standard?

G.hn is expected to achieve complete consent in September 2009.

What has been agreed to so far?

The work group worked very diligently and delivered in December a "foundation standard" that specifies the entire physical layer of the standard (also known as the PHY). This includes the forward error correction code (LDPC), the Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) parameters and other critical PHY layer issues.

What is left to be agreed upon?

In addition to the PHY, the group made significant progress on Media Access Control (MAC) related technical issues. While these items were not ratified in December, many foundational MAC issues have been discussed and basic agreements have been made already.

How will G.hn handle existing standards in the market today such as HomePNA?

G.hn is a next generation standard. It is not backward compatible with existing home networking standards. However, most companies will implement backward compatibility to support legacy standards. This is easy to do in chip implementations without burdening the standard with mandatory components that many companies won't or can't implement easily.

When will G.hn chips become available?

G.hn chip samples are expected in late 2009 or in 2010 with production chips in 2010.

When will devices with G.hn chips become broadly available?

G.hn-based devices should be ready in late 2010 or early 2011.
