Everywire. Everywhere.

The future of Home Entertainment Networking is G.hn and the future of G.hn is CopperGate.

G.hn is the ITU-T recommendation - the next generation home entertainment network standard that boasts:

  • Support for coax, phone lines and power lines in one chipset
  • Up to triple the performance of current generation wired home network standards
  • Universal, global appeal with support of recognized standards body, ITU
  • Next generation robustness
  • Self installation by end users
  • Completely plug and play - no passwords or tricky security set-up
  • Green technology supporting advanced power saving modes

CopperGate Plays a Leading Role in G.hn

CopperGate is one of the leading proponents of G.hn and is active in the G.hn work group that helped ratify the foundation standard in December 2008, the approval of the Physical layer in September 2009 and of the Data link layer in June 2010. CopperGate is active in the certification and interoperability work in the C&I group of the HomeGrid Forum. CopperGate is considered one of the leaders in G.hn. Analysts and press agree that CopperGate is the frontrunner in implementing G.hn.

CopperGate is in a unique position after the purchase of Conexant's HomePlug AV business in May 2008. This acquisition brought 10 years of power-line experience to the CopperGate team. Now, CopperGate has extensive expertise in all media: coax, phoneline and powerline.

Target Devices

G.hn represents the true potential of home entertainment networking. This universal standard delivers the ultimate in performance with the highest level of interconnectivity among devices in the home (in homes throughout the world)! G.hn chips will be integrated into:

  • Set Top Boxes
  • Media Centers
  • PCs and Notebooks
  • Printers
  • TVs
  • DVRs
  • Gaming Consoles
  • Blu-ray Players
  • Residential Gateways
  • ONTs
  • Storage Devices
  • IP Cameras
  • Femtocell Extenders
  • Smart Appliances

Target Applications

G.hn is perfect for virtually every kind of home entertainment network including IPTV, Triple Play, Whole Home DVR and more. It is also an excellent technology for access in MDU and hospitality and Broadband Access applications. Finally, G.hn will be used as an extender to Femtocells and other cell solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is G.hn?

G.hn is the name of the ITU-T standards subgroup handling next generation home networking solutions. G.hn Recommendation is composed of three core components:

  • ITU Recommendation G.9960 - Physical Layer
  • Recommendation G.9961 - Data Link Layer
  • Recommendation G.9972 - Coexistence Protocol

When will G.hn become a complete standard?

G.hn achieved complete approval in June 2010.

How will G.hn handle existing standards in the market today such as HomePNA?

Sigma Designs (CopperGate's parent company) will deliver G.hn chipsets with complete backward compatibility to HomePNA. Every service provider who uses G.hn will have a smooth migration from legacy standards to the next generation.

How is G.hn better than P1901?

G.hn is a true next generation standard that takes the best available technology and delivers it over three different media. P1901 is two incompatible technologies (HomePlug AV and HD-PLC) and pretends they are one interoperable standard.

Moreover, P1901 is only authorized to work over powerline. The IEEE does not endorse any devices in P1901 over other media so compatibility testing is not ensured.

When will G.hn chips become available?

G.hn chip samples are expected in late 2010 with production chips in 2011.

When will devices with G.hn chips become broadly available?

G.hn-based devices should be ready in 2011.

What will a G.hn architecture look like?
